If you take the Cassiar you have to back track about 150 miles to get to Liard Hotsprings which is a must stop for most folks. The Cassiar is not as straight or improved as the regular hiway (97). If I'm here in Wasilla, AK (40 north of Anchorage)I can get you some oil, with advance notice.

My first time over the hiway was in '68, 1200+ miles of gravel in a '63 Ford Falcon.
Wow ... I thought it would get better rather then worse over the last few years. Sorry to hear that the road is so bad.

Absolutely. Lisa and me both. Stay in touch with when you'll be here. I have moved since you were here last, don't forget to email me for our current address.

Also, while you're here, take a look at the hitch I have in my Jetta, I had it specially made so a tank could go there that I never did put a tank there. I have towed cars with it.

As to carrying all you need, ask n2VO what a low-rider our Jetta looked like, even after we had already used almost half of what we took on one trip!!

I can't fathom 1200 miles on a gravel road. Would love to sit and chat with you about it (and look at pictures if you have them) sometime if we are ever up there. Which I would love to do someday--

Jeff

akghound, Helena is right on our path. Glenn will be in contact with you to get your location info and we'll drop by in the early portion of our journey.

We would like to come back to Vancouver on the Casair Hwy, unless there are strong reasons against. Ideally, we want to limit the number of miles we'll need to backtrack (on the Alcan Hwy), but if the Casair is too difficult to traverse, then it may be out of the question.

Well that's not good for a low-riding VW. Glenn mentioned to me that in a place with such frost issues, it may turn out to be too problematic. We can test the waters on more popular roads, and if we need to cut the Cassiar out of the trip, it wouldn't add too many miles to the total. Thanks for the heads up.

Hopefully the Cassiar has improved, because we wanted to check out the Liard Hotsprings.

That would be an honor. Glenn will send you a PM or email, probably once we are on the backstretch. It would be great to see the face behind the name.

Great! We'll contact you right before we head out of LA. You're our first stop.
Your hitch design would be ideal. Did I ever get to show you my tank? We'll have to pull our rides next to each other and compare the layouts.

Thanks for all the posts from everyone. If anyone has some recent info since alaskanvegi's 2006 Cassair (Route 37) Hwy experience, please post your opinions. Like John Galt said, this road-trip will be educational, so we need as much info as possible.

You might want to consider a skid plate for that tank and hoses in the pic.

I'm working on a stainless skid plate right now. I've been running it without one for a year, but I've never really had it fully loaded.

Default Thank You!

My first post to Frybrid is one of great gratitude. I would like to thank everyone that posted offers of WVO and advice so far. I believe I have contacted all of you to request information about how to get in touch when we are on the road. If I have missed anyone, I apologize, and please post again to the thread.

I have been lurking about the Frybrid forums for over 2 years now. I apologize for not posting, but all of my questions that I came to the forum for have always been answered via the search button! How crazy is that!

I will admit that I am not a total newbie to WVO powered autos. I have built 2 home-made conversions myself. A 81 MB 300TD and a 96 VW Passat and have logged over 80,000 miles on WVO between them.

Thanks for the great archive of information, in addition to everyone's kind offers. I hope to add to the archive and return the favors in the future.

Glenn

Glenn has actually posted a few times to Frybrid in the past, but thru my username. In fact he had a slight disagreement with Mr Linscott about keeping temp back on one of our 2006 roadtrips.

Glenn's information on the lack of temp.

Linscott's reply.

Glenn's response. (I especially like the part where he says, "...because Mr. Linscott lives in the same climate as I do and I am assuming he uses what he sells.")

Default Cassiar Highway

Just to clarify your northern route options.

The "must do" Liard Hotsprings are on the Alaska Hwy between Fort Nelson, British Columbia and Watson Lake, Yukon. That route is now the greatly preferred option to the Cassiar Hwy for two reasons - MUCH better road (paved) and has the hot springs.

The Cassiar Hwy has its quality moments, but last summer (07) it had substantial road construction that could prove fatal to a low clearance vehicle. I watched people with low clearance RVs and camp trailers literally inching along as they weaved in and out of pot holes, bumps and rocks that would break or puncture undercarriage fixtures.

The Cassiar is not a place to break down. Its a very long way to any good mechanic or vehicle lifting device and a MUCH longer way to new parts with long, costly delivery times and distances.

John_Galt asked me to assist with supplying you with processed VO when you get to Whitehorse. Contact him regarding your timing and such.

I suggest you take the Alaska Hwy north and then when heading back south check in Whitehorse as to the current state of the Cassiar Hwy (Hwy 37).

By the way, they may be called Highways, but both the Alaska and the Cassiar are two lane roads. The Alaska Hwy is higher(?) speed; the Cassiar a winding generally paved road with problematic frost heaves and construction.

Skeeter,
Thank you very much for your comments--this is information is vital and will greatly impact our route. Glenn will get in contact with John_Galt about your Whitehorse information. And if you can spare a few cubes, we should be set for the ride thru British Columbia.

I noticed you put quotes around "must do." Do you not think the Laird Hot Springs are that interesting? I detect from your tone that it may not be worth the risky adventure.

We would like to meet up with you in Whitehorse to discuss the state of Hwy 37. Since our trip cannot exceed three weeks, we can't afford to be crawling several hundred miles down a heaving Cassiar Hwy.
