{"id":414,"date":"2018-07-29T20:48:22","date_gmt":"2018-07-30T03:48:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/?p=414"},"modified":"2018-06-17T23:33:17","modified_gmt":"2018-06-18T06:33:17","slug":"6-9-7-3-idi-van-lift-pump-and-stock-filter-delete-upgraded-e-pump-sensors-and-frame-rail-dual-filter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/fuel-system\/6-9-7-3-idi-van-lift-pump-and-stock-filter-delete-upgraded-e-pump-sensors-and-frame-rail-dual-filter\/","title":{"rendered":"6.9 \/ 7.3 IDI Van Lift-Pump and Stock Filter Delete. | Upgraded E-Pump, Sensors, and Frame Rail Dual Filter."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over several years, I have upgraded my fuel system substantially from the stock Ford van system.\u00a0 There were so many problems:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stock filter head had a poor filtration rating<\/li>\n<li>Bleeding the system was a PITA<\/li>\n<li>The filter head would piss all over your engine and accessories during a filter change<\/li>\n<li>Stock fuel system was notorious for leaking and air intrusion<\/li>\n<li>The stock design was bafflingly over-complicated<\/li>\n<li>The lift-pump-to-filter-head metal line obstructed the best access to the IP<\/li>\n<li>A lift pump diaphragm failure could result in catastrophic engine damage<\/li>\n<li>MOST IMPORTANTLY: The stock filter head used up the most valuable real estate in the van engine bay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I wanted to design a better bleeding system, spruce things up, make things more efficient, and improve filtration.\u00a0 So over the last two years, I&#8217;ve been testing and implementing various system options to optimize all the desired characteristics above.<\/p>\n<p>Long Story Short:\u00a0 <em>I installed a 7-9 psi Duralift E-pump and R&amp;D&#8217;s Stage 1 dual filter setup on the frame, then ran rubber fuel hose up to a custom fuel supply &#8220;hub&#8221; which then connects to the R&amp;D IP Inlet elbow.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Detailed Explanation:<\/p>\n<p>Since I wanted to keep <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/fuel-system\/mid-80s-ford-idi-van-center-diesel-tank-sender-replacement\/\">the stock fuel tank and sender apparatus<\/a> intact, along with the stock diesel fuel selector valve, I knew that my custom fuel supply intervention would need to start directly after the selector valve.\u00a0 The lines that connect the metal fuel tubing to the selector valve are plastic, which reside in a sheath of rubber.\u00a0 By cutting the line a few inches in front of the selector valve, I was able to slide on a diesel-rated fuel hose directly around the blue plastic stock line, and preserve the selector valve fittings without some sort of cobbed up fitting.<\/p>\n<p>This is where I wanted to install R&amp;D&#8217;s Stage 1 Filter bracket on the frame rail.\u00a0 Justin does a spiffy job of welding up that bracket so it&#8217;s a 2-minute install, however, my van just didn&#8217;t have the real estate under the van.\u00a0 I have a lot going on down there.\u00a0 Under the van, I have the following additional accessories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/engine\/gearvender-deep-sump-installation-tutorial-maximum-overdrive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gearvendor Unit<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Third Fuel Tank (Biofuel)<\/li>\n<li>Biofuel Heated Fuel Circuit (FPHE, Heated filter head, Dedicated E-pump, insulation, and various coolant shut-off valves.)<\/li>\n<li>Coolant Filter<\/li>\n<li>Rear Heater Core and Air Conditioning Hoses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180401_112625sfw.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-777\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180401_112625sfw-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" height=\"114\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180401_112625sfw-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180401_112625sfw-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180401_112625sfw.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 202px) 100vw, 202px\" \/><\/a>All this stuff resides in the space in front of the middle fuel tank, driver&#8217;s door, C6 crossmember, and transmission.\u00a0 If I ever wanted to run a front driveshaft, I&#8217;d be SOL.<\/p>\n<p>So, installing R&amp;D&#8217;s filter bracket was out of the question.\u00a0 I pulled the filter heads off the aluminum mount and found some spots for the e-pump, water-block- and fuel filters on the C6 Crossmember.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/u_d1eWNmiQY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll get into the wiring of the E-Pump later.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20180316_100137sfw-e1523858330929.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-608\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/20180316_100137sfw-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"112\" \/><\/a>With the e-pump and filters on the crossmember, all I needed to do was run a hose up to the IP.\u00a0 Not really.\u00a0 Without a means for bleeding the air from the fuel lines, it would be almost impossible to start the engine.\u00a0 The stock system has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/fuel-system\/what-to-do-if-no-diesel-fuel-is-coming-out-of-the-schroeder-valve-on-a-6-9-7-3-idi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Schrader Valve<\/a> on top of the stock filter head, in the image on the right.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/20180617_schrader.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-769\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/20180617_schrader.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"108\" \/><\/a>I needed to install my own custom Schrader Valve somewhere at the highest point of the fuel system, to ensure that any bubble that gets trapped in the lines will be expelled when I push the valve.\u00a0 After a decent amount of researching, I found <a href=\"http:\/\/rover.ebay.com\/rover\/0\/e11400.m1842.l5919\/7?euid=c2d6f48a61eb46b9b356ed8fda69d0db&amp;loc=http%3A%2F%2Fpayments.ebay.com%2Fws%2FeBayISAPI.dll%3FViewPaymentStatus%26transId%3D1583153010011%26itemId%3D321661519384%26qu%3D1&amp;exe=14057&amp;ext=35977&amp;sojTags=exe=exe,ext=ext\">a company<\/a> that sells &#8220;<em>Ford 7.3 Diesel Powerstroke FUEL RATED Viton Schrader valve\/adapter<\/em>&#8221; which threads into a standard 1\/8&#8243; NPT port.<\/p>\n<p>My first attempt to install a bleeder was using a couple aluminum tee&#8217;s at the top of the engine bay.\u00a0 It worked ok.\u00a0 In hindsight, it was a poorly located because I had to construct a makeshift tray to collect my diesel as I purged the system.\u00a0 And it almost always dripped down the fuel lines and sprayed on the backside of the Air Conditioning Compressor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/20180329_151359sfw.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-770\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/20180329_151359sfw.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"611\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/20180329_151359sfw.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/20180329_151359sfw-300x286.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Biofuel Circuit:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Before I move on to the finished bleeder hub design, I need to back up a few steps.\u00a0 I briefly mentioned I have a third biofuel tank and full biofuel circuit in addition to the diesel-side fuel system I&#8217;m designing.\u00a0 The reason why they are separate is because the following reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>WVO will polymerize with mild steel, copper, and brass.\u00a0 The vast majority of the stock system exclusively uses these materials.<\/li>\n<li>Biofuel will eat up conventional rubbers and seals, so viton seal replacement is prudent.<\/li>\n<li>WVO needs to be heated to 150-180 deg F, so all my biofuel lines and components are heated via the rear heater core circuit.<\/li>\n<li>WVO needs a different fuel pump to accommodate all the additional fuel lines, oil viscosity, and custom components, and still maintain proper pressure at the IP inlet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Up to the IP inlet, both my diesel-circuit and biofuel-circuit are completely separate.\u00a0 The biofuel needs to be up to temp in order for it to match the viscosity of diesel, thus making it viable for pumping through the IP and injectors.\u00a0\u00a0I start the vehicle on diesel, drive it until the biofuel is heated, then it is ready to &#8220;switch over to veg.&#8221;\u00a0 I complete this switch over by running an electrical selector valve at the top of the engine, and an additional return line selector valve near the rear of the engine.\u00a0 Basically to simplify this description, I have to warm up the grease to run on it, and I have to purge the oil with diesel before I turn off the engine.\u00a0 The &#8220;supply&#8221; and &#8220;return&#8221; selector valves allow me to accomplish this.<\/p>\n<p>My selector valves are controlled by two switches on the dash.\u00a0 The second switch turns on the &#8220;return&#8221; selector valve.\u00a0 That one is pretty easy.\u00a0 The first switch is more complicated.\u00a0 When I turn that on, it powers up the &#8220;supply&#8221; selector valve, the biofuel e-pump, and lastly, it runs an NC relay that kills the power to the diesel-side e-pump.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t make any sense to be running the diesel e-pump while I&#8217;m driving on grease.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Selector, Sensor, and Bleeder Hub:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180329_151258sfw.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-773\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180329_151258sfw.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180329_151258sfw.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180329_151258sfw-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180329_151258sfw-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I installed the &#8220;supply&#8221; selector valve and bleeder hub behind the compressor.\u00a0 Also, while I was diagnosing an unrelated fuel pressure issue, I installed a nylon hose mechanical fuel pressure gauge, with a simple NPT tee on the fuel hose going to the IP.\u00a0 Also, the bleeder tee had a temp sensor on it, because when I&#8217;m running on grease, I want a gauge in the van to tell me I&#8217;m getting proper fuel temperature into the IP.\u00a0 If it&#8217;s too cold, it can cause injector damage.\u00a0 If it&#8217;s too hot, it can affect timing and other components.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180329_151346sfw.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-772\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180329_151346sfw.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180329_151346sfw.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180329_151346sfw-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180329_151346sfw-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since I was still exploring how I wanted to finalize and polish this layout, I just zip-tied this stuff together to get a feel for the design.\u00a0 It was a Rube Goldberg setup.\u00a0 I never liked it and it needed to be improved, big time.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/20180510_155227sfw.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-667\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/20180510_155227sfw-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/20180510_155227sfw-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/20180510_155227sfw-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/20180510_155227sfw-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/20180510_155227sfw.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><\/a>Improvements:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recently, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/fuel-system\/new-overhead-gauge-pod\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I installed some new gauges,<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/engine\/7-3-idi-engine-rebuild-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rebuilt the engine<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/engine\/time-lapse-video-and-audio-commentary-of-6-9-to-7-3-idi-engine-swap-in-a-van\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">swapped them<\/a>.\u00a0 While I had the empty engine bay, I thought it was time to do this fuel system overhaul.\u00a0 One of the new gauges included a spiffy (and expensive) Autometer electronic pressure gauge.\u00a0 This was a far superior design than the mechanical nylon tube, that had a pin-hole leak due to vibration or something, and it dribbled diesel on the top of the engine.\u00a0 I always hated those nylon tubes, so I&#8217;ve upgraded all my gauges to electronic senders.<\/p>\n<p>For the &#8220;new&#8221; Bleeder Hub, wanted all the components to mate in one glorious assembly.\u00a0 The following items fit into the hub:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Electronic Fuel Pressure Sender (for the interior gauge)<\/li>\n<li>Mechanical Gauge (for seeing the pressure from the engine bay)<\/li>\n<li>Electronic Temp Sensor<\/li>\n<li>Selector Valve Outlet<\/li>\n<li>Bleeder<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Also, I want the bleeder to extend into the accessible area of the engine, so I can cleanly bleed the air without spraying fuel everywhere.\u00a0 Using some aluminum 4-way tee&#8217;s, aluminum 1\/8&#8243; NPT hose bibs, and some aluminum tubing (aluminum doesn&#8217;t react with biofuel), I constructed what I think is the most efficient way to coalesce all these components, and mount them to the underside of the engine bay:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180515_122732sfw.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-774\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180515_122732sfw.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180515_122732sfw.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180515_122732sfw-300x149.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180515_122732sfw-768x381.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This hub has some rubber stoppers on the top to prevent any metal rubbing on the engine bay or coolant lines.\u00a0 They are fastened to the underside of the bay ceiling near the top of the compressor.\u00a0 The bleeder extends into the front of the engine, and it really works nice.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180515_172205sfw.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-779\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180515_172205sfw.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180515_172205sfw.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180515_172205sfw-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180515_172205sfw-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The hose on the left connects to the &#8220;supply&#8221; selector valve.\u00a0 That outlet pushes the fuel to the 90 degree elbow, which feeds into the 4-way housing both fuel pressure sensors\/gauges, which feeds into the second 4-way that extends the bleeder and houses the temp sensor.\u00a0 Then a final outlet bib connects to a hose that connects to the IP inlet elbow.<\/p>\n<p>This design uses less volume than the previous design, and it implements even more components than before.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Overall:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The new design has worked really well.\u00a0 It&#8217;s nice seeing the fuel pressure while I&#8217;m working on the beast.\u00a0 Also, the bleeder works perfectly.\u00a0 The only improvement I made to the bleeder was to put a small section of rubber hose so it was a little more flexible to manipulate the Schrader Valve.\u00a0 The temp and fuel pressure sensors have functioned as design, allowing me to get accurate readings while running on biofuel or diesel.<\/p>\n<p>At some point I&#8217;ll upgrade this post to include more information on the details of the biofuel circuit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>No warranty.
