{"id":322,"date":"2017-11-27T23:03:35","date_gmt":"2017-11-28T07:03:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/?p=322"},"modified":"2018-03-11T01:13:18","modified_gmt":"2018-03-11T09:13:18","slug":"aligning-the-ip-timing-camshaft-and-crankshaft-gears-on-a-6-9-7-3-idi-engine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/engine\/aligning-the-ip-timing-camshaft-and-crankshaft-gears-on-a-6-9-7-3-idi-engine\/","title":{"rendered":"Aligning the IP Timing, Camshaft, and Crankshaft Gears on a 6.9 \/ 7.3 IDI Engine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a lot on the net about alignment of the IP, Cam, and Crank gears, but I thought I&#8217;d toss in my 2 cents.<\/p>\n<p><em>Brief Overview:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When working on the crank, cam, and\/or IP, there may be a point in the process where the gears need to be removed.\u00a0 When reassembling the engine, these gears have to be meticulously realigned, in order to ensure proper engine timing.\u00a0 Then these gears are covered up by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/engine\/6-9-7-3-idi-front-and-rear-main-seal-replacement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Front Plate (aka Front Cover)<\/a> and the IP Gear Housing.<\/p>\n<p><em>Some Basics:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimg3.ibsrv.net\/gimg\/www.ford-trucks.com-vbulletin\/900x600\/80-img_2850_8d91342c9c9fab0dc728ed1c8b5496cdd4a3463e.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright \" src=\"https:\/\/cimg3.ibsrv.net\/gimg\/www.ford-trucks.com-vbulletin\/900x600\/80-img_2850_8d91342c9c9fab0dc728ed1c8b5496cdd4a3463e.jpg\" width=\"287\" height=\"191\" \/><\/a>If a person can manage it, the best course of action is to <em>never<\/em> remove the gears from their positions.\u00a0 For example, if one has to remove the injector pump, they do not need to pull off the IP Gear House cover.\u00a0 In fact, they can just remove the 5\/16&#8243; head bolts on the timing gear and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/fuel-system\/video-timing-a-1988-ford-e250-econoline-club-wagon-7-3-idi-with-hypermax-turbo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the IP mounting nuts<\/a>, and they can pull the IP with the Gear in the housing.\u00a0 Since the housing closely surrounds\u00a0around the gear, it won&#8217;t hop a tooth, because there isn&#8217;t enough room to clear a tooth.\u00a0 But if that person lifts the gear housing off, then they run the risk of accidentally bumping the gear and skipping a tooth.\u00a0 And that would result in incorrect timing and potentially major issues.<\/p>\n<p>Now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedieselstop.com\/forums\/f30\/timing-7-3-diesel-idi-engine-without-removing-front-cover-177109\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">some people claim they can find the timing location on the cam gear with the front plate cover installed<\/a>.\u00a0 They use mirrors and dental picks to feel for the &#8220;Y&#8221; mark or &#8220;O&#8221; divot in the cam gear.\u00a0 I find that really hard to believe, because even if you can &#8220;feel&#8221; for the divot, it&#8217;s another animal trying to match that with the IP gear.\u00a0 And there is not a lot of room between the front face of the cam gear and the front plate cover.\u00a0 Maybe 1\/4&#8243;, and it&#8217;s buried deep behind the plate.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-338\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/20180125_161303sfw.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/20180125_161303sfw.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/20180125_161303sfw-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/20180125_161303sfw-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are some jobs that require the removal of gears no matter how hard the mechanic tries to avoid it.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/engine\/7-3-idi-crank-rod-bearing-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A crankshaft removal<\/a>, cam removal, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/engine\/6-9-7-3-idi-front-and-rear-main-seal-replacement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IP housing and plate removal<\/a>\u00a0are just a few examples of jobs that will mean realigning the gears.\u00a0 Smart mechanics hold the IP gear while taking the plate and housing off so they can mark the teeth with a paint pen, like the yellow lines in the image below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/20180126_120431sfw.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-337\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/20180126_120431sfw.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/20180126_120431sfw.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/20180126_120431sfw-169x300.jpg 169w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But let&#8217;s just assume that marking the gears are not possible.\u00a0 Like the IP gear fell off the block when you were pulling the housing or plate, or like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/engine\/7-3-idi-crank-rod-bearing-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the crank swap<\/a> I did in 2018.\u00a0 Or you broke a tooth on the gear and had to order a new one.\u00a0 Or you ordered a sweat R&amp;D IDI Performance cam and had to swap over the gear.\u00a0 Well first off, you have to remove the front plate to see what the hell is going on:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-secret=\"uAqmMwCHAg\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\"><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/engine\/6-9-7-3-idi-front-and-rear-main-seal-replacement\/\">6.9 \/ 7.3 IDI Front and Rear Main Seal Replacement<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; &#8211; &#8220;O&#8221; marks on the Crank gear and the Cam gear should align, and the &#8220;Y&#8221; &#8211; &#8220;Y&#8221; marks on the Cam gear and IP gear should align.\u00a0 The service manual talks a big game about some chamfers on the &#8220;Y&#8221; position, but I looked hard for this and didn&#8217;t see anything like that.\u00a0 I assume the put that in the teeth so that it could be identified from looking down the front plate gap, but that isn&#8217;t the case at all.\u00a0 If you put the front cover on the engine without properly marking the cam gear, you are SOL.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-340\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/20180311_gears.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"686\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/20180311_gears.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/20180311_gears-300x257.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/20180311_gears-768x659.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So, with the front cover off, aligning the &#8220;O&#8221;-&#8220;O&#8221; is pretty trivial.\u00a0 However, precariously perching an IP gear on top of a cam gear and hoping it doesn&#8217;t fall over in the process of sealing the front plate cover is a bit sketchy to me.\u00a0 I&#8217;d rather hedge my bets by marking the top of the cam gear with a paint pen, so that I can look down the block and make 100% sure that I have the exact right gear position.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-341\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/20180301_110149sfw2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/20180301_110149sfw2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/20180301_110149sfw2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/20180301_110149sfw2-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Since the cam &#8220;Y&#8221; position is the valley and the IP gear &#8220;Y&#8221; position is the peak, I marked two lines, because my paint pen sucks at drawing on a depression.\u00a0 Then I would mark a spot on the side of the IP gear so that I can sink the side mark directly in the valley on the cam gear.\u00a0 Pretty logical.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-342\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/20180311_ipgearline.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"609\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/20180311_ipgearline.jpg 609w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/20180311_ipgearline-228x300.jpg 228w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 609px) 100vw, 609px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/20180212_164700sfw-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-333\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/20180212_164700sfw-1-300x213.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/20180212_164700sfw-1-300x213.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/20180212_164700sfw-1-768x544.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/20180212_164700sfw-1.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>With the gear successfully aligned, then the IP gear housing can be reinstalled.\u00a0 I carefully install that housing, because there is a tooth and slot that must line up perfectly, otherwise it can lead to damage to the IP Gear Housing, like in the image to the right.\u00a0 The slot and the notch both have to properly sealed with Permatex and aligned prior to torquing it down.\u00a0 The gear housing is aluminum, so it is less durable than the steel components.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>No warranty.
