{"id":1480,"date":"2026-02-04T23:06:03","date_gmt":"2026-02-05T07:06:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/?p=1480"},"modified":"2026-02-04T23:06:03","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T07:06:03","slug":"dana-44-front-axle-seals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/suspension\/dana-44-front-axle-seals\/","title":{"rendered":"Dana 44 Front Axle Seals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ll give this article my seal of approval.<\/p>\n<p>While doing about 44 other things simultaneously on the Dana 44 front axle install for my 1988 E250 van, I somehow managed to change out all the seals on the differential housing with minimal photos.<\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t really a fancy how-to about seals, but it&#8217;s still important that while we got all this crap apart, maybe invest in new seals.\u00a0 The old seals are likely from the original 1979 F250 donor truck.<\/p>\n<p>So I&#8217;m starting this article with the diff already disassembled.\u00a0 If you are looking for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/suspension\/4x4\/quadravan-econoline-tear-down-1988\/\">how I did that, check this article out<\/a>.\u00a0 There are some important things you need to do before ripping the differential pinion and ring gear and carrier out, like labeling things, so check out the previous article.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1412\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20251216_103354.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1235\" height=\"570\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20251216_103354.jpg 1235w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20251216_103354-300x138.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20251216_103354-1024x473.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20251216_103354-768x354.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1235px) 100vw, 1235px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are two races (for the bearings) in the sides of the housing, and they just drop out.\u00a0 Be careful with them, you don&#8217;t want to scratch them if you are reusing them.\u00a0 Behind the races, there are seals.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1481\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/20251216_103401.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1235\" height=\"570\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/20251216_103401.jpg 1235w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/20251216_103401-300x138.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/20251216_103401-1024x473.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/20251216_103401-768x354.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1235px) 100vw, 1235px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is a left and right seal, but they are identical.\u00a0 \u00a0They are just snug-fit into place.\u00a0 They make fancy tools for extracting and installing these seals, but you don&#8217;t need any of that.\u00a0 Just get all the socket extentions you have and your 1-3\/16&#8243; NATIONAL 2300 .\u00a0\u00a0<em><strong>(I bought this because a certain Youtube video said this seal worked for my Dana 44.\u00a0 It did not.)<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Winner Winner:\u00a0 combination socket extensions again, but from the other direction.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the empty axle shaft:\u00a0 (clean it up as good as possible)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" replace the pinion seal.<\/p>\n<p>I had a major PITA trying to get that pinion nut off.\u00a0 Tried heat three times, tried everything.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" steering\/bearing puller.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1417\" used on the pinion nut, with obviously transmitted to the shaft and melted the pinion seal plastic\/rubber.\u00a0 So now it definately needed to be replaced.\u00a0 Slid out the pinion gear from the inside the diff housing and set it aside.\u00a0 I had a bunch of work to do with that pinion and its bearings.\u00a0 That&#8217;ll be in another blog post.<\/p>\n<p>Popped out the pinion seal with a screwdriver.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1418\" shaft out, time for a new outer pinion bearing.\u00a0 The bearing and race came from this kit:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Differential Rebuild Kit.
