{"id":1320,"date":"2022-07-03T00:55:05","date_gmt":"2022-07-03T07:55:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/?p=1320"},"modified":"2022-07-03T00:55:16","modified_gmt":"2022-07-03T07:55:16","slug":"luckiest-ac-leak-find-ever","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/hvac\/air-conditioning\/luckiest-ac-leak-find-ever\/","title":{"rendered":"Luckiest AC Leak Discovery Ever"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Getting ready for some time in the desert, so after I did the 7.3-to-6.9 swap, I needed to recharge the AC system.\u00a0 I figured I would pull a vacuum just to make sure it didn&#8217;t leak (it didn&#8217;t leak before, so I knew it was going to be good to go), and waited an hour.\u00a0 Came back to find the system back to atmospheric pressure.\u00a0 Wild.\u00a0 It was a really slow leak, maybe one inch of mercury every 3-5 minutes.\u00a0 I pulled another session of vacuum and tried to listen with a hose.\u00a0 No luck.<\/p>\n<p>The van is a PITA if you get a leak, because there is a front and rear AC system.\u00a0 Lots of places where it could potentially leak.\u00a0 Since I didn&#8217;t mess with anything in the rear or cab, I figured the leak had to be near the compressor or condensor.<\/p>\n<p>I disconnected the vac pump and put my air compressor on the gauge inlet.\u00a0 Put in about 20 psi and went back to listening with a hose.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve never had good luck with doing the redneck stethescope, but I had nothing to lose.\u00a0 Checked the connections at the condensor, and those were quiet.\u00a0 Checked by the compressor, and that was quiet too.\u00a0 I also checked the AC hose hubs in the back and by the dryer as well.\u00a0 Nothing was apparent.<\/p>\n<p>The leak was extremely slow, so I knew this was going to be a long shot.\u00a0 I returned to the connections at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nickpisca.com\/diesel\/engine\/1980s-ford-air-conditioning-compressor-clutch-fs-6-replacement\/\">the FS-6 compressor<\/a> just to see if maybe I missed something.\u00a0 We did remove the compressor during the engine swap, so maybe the connections were loose.\u00a0 I put the hose in my ear and moved the opposite end around the compressor inlets and outlets.\u00a0 By the passenger side connection, I heard the slightest hissing noise.\u00a0 It was almost inperceptible.\u00a0 I almost thought it was some static sound from somewhere else.<\/p>\n<p>The more I scanned that area, the more I was convinced that slight hissing was my leak.\u00a0 I took a 10mm socket and gave it a slight turn.\u00a0 Open made it louder, closed made it quieter.\u00a0 WOO!\u00a0 Found it!<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, tightening it down didn&#8217;t fix it.\u00a0 I took off the connection and inspected the o-rings.\u00a0 Sadly, one must&#8217;ve been cut during the engine swap process, which is likely since those fat AC hoses don&#8217;t nest out of the way very well, and we must have cut them on a exhaust manifold or cylinder head on the way into the engine bay.<\/p>\n<p>I dove into my AC parts and found 2 sets of o-rings, but they were for VW&#8217;s.\u00a0 My Ford sets were out.\u00a0 Nothing would fit into the inset for the compressor with what I got in my supply.\u00a0 I called around and found a Ford kit on the central part of town, got the set, and installed it right away.\u00a0 Held vacuum for the entire night.\u00a0 That&#8217;s tight.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Getting ready for some time in the desert, so after I did the 7.3-to-6.9 swap, I needed to recharge the&#8230;
